The Researchers joined Inkblots 2006: The Eighth University of Sto. Tomas National Campus Journalism Fellowship held on October 17-19, 2006 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex Auditorium, UST, España, Manila.
Mark Rodel C. Marmol, Homer V. Lindain, Faye Victoria C. Casimero, Anna Lowella R. Velasco, Rommel P. Alberto, Jordan D. Pacubas, Mahalene Kristine R. Bajit and their advisers, Ms. Mercedita C. Morales and Mr. Michael C. Delos Santos, rubbed-elbows with highly respected and national journalists, lecturers and other potential student journalists from 32 other schools as far as Mindanao.
To foster campus journalism excellence and to improve ethical values among the Filipino youth, The Varsitarian, the official publication of UST, sponsored the fellowship for the eighth time with Maria Ressa, head of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs Department, as the keynote speaker.
The seven fellows (the participants were called) from the University Science High School attended lectures on News Writing by UST faculty and a reporter from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Christian Esguerra; Culture and Lifestyle Writing by multi-awarded Sunday Inquirer Magazine associate editor, Ruel De Vera; Feature Writing by award-winning entertainment editor of Tempo and feature writer of Panorama, the Sunday magazine of the Manila Bulletin, Nestor Cuarteto; Investigative Writing by the managing editor of Newsbreak, Glenda Gloria; Filipino Writing by the Father of Philippine Performance Peotry and director of the University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing, Vim Nadera; Photojournalism by the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s chief photographer, Ernie Sarmiento; Cartooning by a cartoonist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Jess Abrera; Column Writing by the host of ANC’s The Explainer, Manuel Quezon III; Broadcast Writing by a host in I-witness and newscaster of 24 Oras and Saksi, Sandra Aguinaldo; Campus Paper Management by an editor and writer of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Lito Zulueta; Sports Writing by column publisher in the Philippine Star and the Sports Weekly Magazine, analyst and commentator for the Philippine Basketball Association and National Basketball Association, Quinito Henson; Panelists during the Panel Discussion were the award-winning host of GMA-7 documentary Reporter’s Notebook, Rodrigo “Jiggy” Manicad Jr. and the former Malacanang press undersecretary and Manila Correspondent for the New York Times, Alit Colet- Villadolid; Journalism Ethics by the Newsgathering Department head of ABS-CBN’s News and Current Affairs, Charie Villa.
As part of the seminar, The Varsitarian sponsored snacks, lunch and fellowship nights. The participants were also provided with kits, bags and t-shirts.
