Sicilienne M. Barroga conquered the international scene when her thesis entitled, “Abatement of Ammonia Emission by Dietary Inclusion in Pig Grower Diet”, was accepted for poster presentation in the 12th Asian- Australian Animal Production (AAAP) Animal Science Congress held in Busan, South Korea on September 18-22, 2006.
The study, which won second best thesis during the USHS Annual Science Fair, worked on the reduction of ammonia gas, an odorant present in the fecal wastes of pigs, through dietary probiotic inclusion without compromising the growth and development of the animals.
In the study made, Barroga detected a 35 % reduction in fecal ammonia gas. If hog farmers are exposed for a long time to a concentration of this gas which can reach more than 25 ppm, then their health is in grave danger of the effects of ammonia gas.
The study was conducted to determine the effect of dietary probiotic inclusion on growth performance, feed profit and removal efficiency on fecal ammonia and also to investigate the relationship between the temperature and ammonia emission.
The results showed that there was no significant difference in daily feed intake, daily gain weight, feed conversion efficiency and feed cost per kilogram gain weight during the 30- day feeding trial. Also, the findings of the experiment showed no correlation between temperature and ammonia emission thus suggesting other factors.
The study also showed that the probiotics can improve growth and economic performance of pigs and mitigate ammonia emission.
Barroga’s father, Dr. Antonio J. Barroga and adviser, Mrs. Gella Patria Abella co-authored the said thesis. The author’s parents also participated in the said congress thus completing the family grand participation. Dr. Barroga, an animal nutritionist, presented his post- doctoral experiment entitled “ Effect of Varying Dietary Protein Levels And Weights in Predicting Fecal Chemical Composition Of Finishing Pigs” while Dr. Rocelyn Barroga, an economist, presented her dissertation, “ Comparative Socio- Economic and Technical Impact Analysis of Rice- Monoculture and Rice-Duck Farming in the Philippines”.
Barroga, a freshman college taking up Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of the Philippines (Los Baños) shared that this is the start of more challenging academic struggles in her life.
